Delicatessen: Matt Dunkley – Cycle 5 (Clint Mansell Remix)

February 12, 2016

If you check out Matt Dunkley‘s IMDb page, your jaw most probably is going to drop. He’s been involved in more than a hundred films as orchestrator and conductor.

‘Inception’, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Black Swan’ just to mention a few titles… He also worked with artists such as Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Massive Attack and Kronos Quartet. It was about time to release his debut artist album: ‘Six Cycles’ was recorded with the renowned Babelsberg Film Orchestra and it will be released on 11th March on Village Green. Sounds Of A Tired City got the honour to premiere a remix of one of tracks from the upcoming album, which has been made by none other than our favourite Clint Mansell.

Matt Dunkley - Six Cycles

Matt Dunkley studied trumpet and piano at the London College of Music and has gone on to conduct all of the UK’s top orchestras as well as international ensembles such as The Los Angeles Philharmonic (at The Hollywood Bowl), and The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (at the Sydney Opera House). He has scored two feature films, a number of network series for British Television as well as music for adverts and production libraries.  For  the  theatre,  he  wrote  and  arranged  a  ground-breaking  arena  version  of  Peter  Pan: The Neverending Story, that is currently on a world tour, and he has just completed the score to Flanders Fields, a theatre piece set alongside a war grave cemetery in Belgium.

According to Dunkley, the inspiration for the six pieces that comprise the album derive from disparate sources like a piece of poetry, a painting or the emotion of personal loss. Even though initially they seemed to be unrelated, as he listened to them as a whole, a sense of them belonging together slowly emerged, forming a true “cycle”. He wants the listener to discover their own world within his music, hence the wilfully enigmatic titles (Cycle 1, Cycle 2, Cycle 3, Cycle 4, Cycle 5 and Cycle 6). These cycles make the impression of a masterfully crafted soundtrack of a film that has never been made. While listening to the album, we can easily imagine our own little stories being accompanied by the Wagneresque sounds, which are powerful enough to live their own lives but also leave enough space for the imagination.

As we promised, we’ve got an exclusive Clint Mansell remix of ‘Cycle 5’ for you, which is coming on a separate EP. As claimed by Mansell, “Matt is an incredible orchestrator and conductor, helping many different composers realise their ambitions with music. Now, he deserves to be heard for his own expressions. You won’t be disappointed.” True that!
